Justin Timberlake

I met Veronica Finn in a cocktail bar in Orlando. She had kindly agreed to drive over from Tampa where she worked in real estate. Veronica was Justin Timberlake’s girlfriend immediately before Britney Spears. By a twist of fate she had taken Britney’s place in an all girl band called Innosense before Britney took her place in Justin’s affections. She was blonde, elegant and composed and spoke about Justin with regard, affection and honesty. She helped me build a picture of a young man who was hugely romantic and fell in love too easily. She told me, shyly, that he was a gentle and caring lover and we both laughed as she recalled some relationships since then where that hadn’t been the case.

Justin was beginning to make it big with ’N Sync and Veronica had her own musical ambitions. The inevitable happened and absence did not make the heart grow fonder. Instead of holding your lover in your arms you are left holding the telephone night after night. Eventually Veronica could no longer stand the air of suspicion and insecurity and finished it by leaving a message on his answerphone telling him not to call back.

Veronica showed me a picture of her and Justin on holiday in the Bahamas. He had bleached-blond hair and hers was orange. It was not a good look – definitely one of the least starry people I have met. I love this sort of interview because it provides real insight into real lives.
